St Johns Ambulance

During April 2007, Framlingham St John celebrated 70 years in  Framlingham, formed in 1937 by seven local business men.  By February 1938, the ladies of the town had also formed a section.

With the outbreak of war, St John set up a first aid post in a small building, close to the Green Shed in Fore Street and a duty rota by members was undertaken.  During 1939/1940 members were called up and took up many roles in the armed forces.  Those members left moved to a new first aid post at the junction of Fairfield Road and Fore Street. In 1945 an ambulance was bought from London and by 1947 was covering 3,160 miles a year.

Framlingham St John has always had a close connection with Thomas Mills High School, providing first aid cover at events and various courses. When the cadet division was formed in 1945, it was by Miss Prickett, the headmistress of the Mills Grammar School, with girls from her school as cadets.

In 1965 a piece of land in Fairfield Road was donated by Mr A K Cooper to St John and a H.Q was constructed from prefabs. In 2005 the new home of Framlingham St John was completed, The Westbury Centre, built on the site in Fairfield Road, and opened by HRH the Duke of Gloucester. This is now a valued resource used by St John and the community for Town Council meetings etc, by other charitable organisations and local businesses.

Today Framlingham St John has a Crusader Ambulance, Badgers, Cadets, Adults and Fellowship groups.  We also run various First Aid, Fire Marshall and Health and Safety related courses in The Westbury Centre with St John being the leading first aid training provider in the UK.
The national recruitment campaign for volunteers to join St John in many roles, fundraisers, administrators, carers, youth leaders and first aiders is taking place now.  If you would like more details about the varied work of St John and how you could be a part of it, please do contact us.

We would like to remind event organisers to contact us early.  We need at least six weeks notice, the earlier the better to avoid disappointment, further details on 01728 621674.
